A kitchen sink with a tall black faucet

Every plug-in mini tank is 1,440 W on a 120 V 15 A circuit, so they all refill at the same rate — roughly 5 to 6 gallons an hour. The choice is stored volume: 4 gallons for a bathroom basin, 7.1 gallons for a kitchen sink. The Bosch ES8 is the pick; the Rheem MiniTank for a published leak warranty.

The useful thing to understand about this category is that it is unusually honest. There is no efficiency arms race and no feature differentiation, because the appliance is a small insulated tank with a 1,440 W element and a thermostat. Every manufacturer lands on the same wattage for the same reason: that is what a 15 A outlet allows.

Which means you can ignore almost all the marketing and choose on three things: how much you draw at once, whether it fits, and what happens if it leaks.

The picks in full

Twin white basins in a bright bathroom

Pick 1 — A sink plus a small basin

Bosch Tronic 3000 T ES8 (7.1 gal)

The larger mini tank: 7.1 gallons delivered per draw cycle on an ordinary 15 A outlet, which stretches the category from one faucet to a small bathroom.

Published specifications for the Bosch Tronic 3000 T ES8 (7.1 gal)
Capacity7.1 gallons
Voltage120 V
Power1,440 W
CircuitStandard 120 V 15 A outlet
DeliveryUp to 7.1 gallons per draw cycle before recovery
TankGlass-lined, foam insulated

What is good

  • Nearly double the ES4's storage on the same 15 A outlet
  • 7.1 gallons covers washing up plus a basin without recovering
  • No wiring work needed
  • Same simple serviceable design as the smaller unit

What is not

  • Takes more cabinet space than the 4-gallon version
  • Same 1,440 W recovery, so it refills no faster — it just holds more
  • Larger standby loss than the ES4

Skip it if: Skip it if the cabinet under the sink is shallow. The ES8 is noticeably bigger than the ES4, and a mini tank that does not fit the cabinet ends up on the floor beside it.

A kitchen sink with a tall black faucet

Pick 2 — Wall-mounted point of use

Rheem Professional Classic MiniTank, 6 gal

Six gallons on a shared 120 V outlet from a brand with real warranty support: five years on leaks, two on parts, and four capacities in the same family if six is the wrong number.

Published specifications for the Rheem Professional Classic MiniTank, 6 gal
Capacities available1.5, 2.5, 4.0 and 6.0 gallons
Voltage120 V, grounded shared outlet via power cord
MountingFloor or wall, bracket included
FootprintUp to 93% smaller than a standard electric tank
Warranty5-year leaks, 2-year parts

What is good

  • A published leak warranty, which most mini tanks do not carry
  • Four capacities in one family, so you can size to the fixture
  • Shared outlet means it can share a circuit with the disposal
  • Wall mounting frees the cabinet floor

What is not

  • Rheem does not publish a first-hour rating for the MiniTank line
  • Six gallons is still a point-of-use volume
  • Cord-and-plug connection limits where it can legally go in some jurisdictions

Skip it if: Skip it if the outlet under your sink is on a GFCI circuit shared with a garbage disposal that trips. A mini tank that loses power silently is a tank of cold water you only discover at the faucet.

A bathroom vanity with the cabinet space beneath the sink

Pick 3 — A single far-away sink

Bosch Tronic 3000 T ES4 (4 gal)

Four gallons on a standard wall outlet: the simplest fix for the bathroom at the far end of the house where hot water takes 90 seconds to arrive.

Published specifications for the Bosch Tronic 3000 T ES4 (4 gal)
Capacity4 gallons
Voltage120 V
Power1,440 W
Current12 A
CircuitStandard 120 V 15 A outlet
TankGlass-lined with CFC-free foam insulation
MountingFloor or wall, bracket included
Thermal efficiency98%

What is good

  • Plugs into an existing outlet — no electrician, no permit, no panel work
  • Front-mounted temperature knob rather than a hidden thermostat
  • Wall or floor mounting makes it fit a vanity cabinet or a utility corner
  • Eliminates the long wait and the water wasted waiting

What is not

  • Four gallons is one sink, not one shower
  • 1,440 W recovery means you notice the limit if you drain it
  • Still a standby load, albeit a small one

Skip it if: Skip it if you want this to feed a shower. Four gallons at 1,440 W will produce a warm rinse and then cold water — the mini-tank category is for hand washing and dishes.

An assortment of threaded plumbing fittings

Pick 4 — Commercial-style under-counter installs

Eemax EMT6 (6 gal mini tank)

A 6-gallon plug-in tank with a published 50 to 140°F adjustable range and real dimensions on the spec sheet — the one to specify when the install has to be drawn before it is built.

Published specifications for the Eemax EMT6 (6 gal mini tank)
Capacity6 gallons
Voltage120 V
Current12 A
Power1,440 W
Temperature range50 - 140°F, adjustable
Dimensions18 in H x 15-3/4 in W x 15-1/2 in D
Weight26 lb

What is good

  • Full dimensions and weight published, which matters for a cabinet or a millwork drawing
  • Adjustable down to 50°F for tempered-water-only applications
  • Plugs into a 110 to 120 V outlet
  • Smaller EMT2.5 and EMT4 share the same mounting approach

What is not

  • Wider and deeper than the Bosch ES8 for the same nominal capacity
  • Same 1,440 W recovery as every other plug-in mini tank
  • Thinner retail availability than Bosch or Rheem

Skip it if: Skip it if cabinet depth is the constraint. At 15-1/2 inches deep it is the bulkiest 6-gallon unit here, and under-sink depth is almost always what rules a mini tank out.

The leak question

A mini tank lives inside a cabinet, under a sink, usually above a floor that would be damaged by water, and nobody looks in there for months at a time. It is a near-perfect environment for a slow leak to do quiet damage.

Two things follow. First, the Rheem MiniTank's published 5-year leak and 2-year parts warranty is a genuine differentiator in a category where most units do not publish separate leak coverage. Second, a cheap water sensor in the cabinet is the most sensible 20 dollars you will spend on this project. Leak detectors.

Where mini tanks genuinely shine

  • The far bathroom in a long house. Removes a 90-second wait and roughly a gallon and a half of wasted water per use.
  • A detached workshop or studio with only a sink. No need to extend hot water from the house at all.
  • A kitchen island sink that is a long run from the heater.
  • A rental or an ADU where a full heater is overkill but running hot water is expected.
  • A guest bathroom used twice a year, where keeping 50 gallons hot for it is absurd.

Where they do not

  • Anywhere a shower is involved. Repeatedly: 4 to 7 gallons at 1,440 W is not a shower.
  • As a whole-house heater in a tiny apartment. It will not keep up with a kitchen and a bathroom.
  • Where the cabinet is too shallow. The Eemax EMT6 is 15-1/2 inches deep; plenty of vanities are not.
  • On a circuit that trips. Sharing a GFCI with a garbage disposal that trips occasionally means a tank of cold water you only discover at the tap.

What goes in with it

A water heater is a system, not a box. These are the parts that go in with it, and the ones people discover they need halfway through the job.

  • Leak detector

A mini tank lives in a cabinet, which is exactly where a slow leak goes unnoticed for months.

  • Anode rod

Mini tanks have one too, and in hard water it is what decides how long the unit lasts.

How we chose

Stored volume against the fixture, then published dimensions, then warranty terms with leak coverage weighted heavily because of where these units live. We have not tested these units. How we pick.

Questions people actually ask

›What is the best mini tank water heater?
The Bosch Tronic 3000 T ES8 at 7.1 gallons for a kitchen sink, or the ES4 at 4 gallons for a bathroom basin. The Rheem MiniTank is the pick if you want its published 5-year leak and 2-year parts warranty.
›How many gallons does a mini tank water heater hold?
Between 1.5 and 7.1 gallons depending on the model. Rheem's MiniTank line comes in 1.5, 2.5, 4.0 and 6.0 gallons; Bosch offers 2.5, 4 and 7.1; Eemax offers 2.5, 4 and 6.
›Do mini tank water heaters use a lot of electricity?
No. They are 1,440 W while heating, which is about the same as a hair dryer on a low setting, and they only heat the few gallons they hold. There is a small continuous standby loss, which is why they belong at a fixture that gets used rather than one that does not.
›Can two sinks share one mini tank water heater?
Yes, if the sinks are close together and not used at the same time. A 6 or 7-gallon unit serving two nearby basins is a common and sensible arrangement.
›Where should a mini tank water heater be installed?
As close to the fixture as possible, which is the entire point — every foot of pipe between the unit and the tap is water you wait for. Wall mounting keeps the cabinet floor free and keeps the unit out of any water that collects there.
›How long do mini tank water heaters last?
Manufacturers do not publish a service life, and we are not going to guess one. What they do publish is warranty: Rheem offers 5 years on leaks and 2 on parts for the MiniTank line, which is the clearest signal available.
