A bright open-plan family kitchen and dining area

A family of four needs roughly 70 gallons of hot water in the peak hour. That means a 40 to 50 gallon gas tank with a first-hour rating of 70 or more, a 50 to 65 gallon electric resistance tank, or a 50 gallon heat pump water heater — the heat pump's first-hour rating is good enough that it does not need to be bigger.

Four people is where the sizing conversation gets interesting, because it is the first household size at which the fuel genuinely changes the answer. Two people can be served adequately by almost anything. Four people in a two-bathroom house with a morning schedule will find the limits of an undersized tank within a week.

Where 70 gallons comes from

Peak hour, not daily total. Four people do not all shower at once, but on a weekday morning three of them probably shower inside the same hour, somebody shaves, and the dishwasher runs on the tail of it.

A four-person peak hour, itemized
DrawMixed gallonsHot gallons, approximate
Shower, 10 min at 2.1 GPM2114
Shower, 10 min at 2.1 GPM2114
Shower, 8 min at 2.1 GPM1711
Shaving and hand washing64
Dishwasher cycle66
Kitchen sink, rinse43
Peak hour total7552 to 70 depending on mix temperature

The spread in that last row is why we say "about 70". If your household showers hotter, or the showers are longer, or the inlet water is cold, the hot-gallon figure moves toward the top of the range. Sizing to 70 gives you headroom without buying a tank you do not need.

What to buy on each fuel

Natural gas or propane

A 40-gallon gas tank genuinely works for four people if the burner is decent, because gas recovers at roughly 36 to 50 gallons an hour. A 50-gallon gas tank with a 50,000 BTU burner is rated at 91 gallons in the first hour, which is comfortable headroom. Start at gas tank water heaters, or go straight to 50 gallon gas.

Electric resistance

Here the arithmetic tightens. A 50-gallon electric tank with two 4,500 W elements recovers around 21 gallons an hour at a 90°F rise, so a typical first-hour rating is 63 gallons — below our 70-gallon target. That works if showers are staggered and fails if they overlap. For four people on electric resistance we would size to 65 gallons, or accept a schedule. Electric tank water heaters.

Heat pump

This is the best answer for a four-person all-electric household, if you have somewhere to put it. A 50-gallon heat pump unit is rated at 67 gallons in the first hour and uses roughly a quarter of the electricity. The conditions — air volume, condensate, noise, and the fact that it cools the room it stands in — are real and are covered at are heat pump water heaters worth it.

Tankless

For four people, a 199,000 BTU gas tankless unit covers two simultaneous showers comfortably in most climates. Electric tankless for a four-person house needs 24 kW or more and the electrical service to match, which most older homes do not have. Tankless for 2 bathrooms is the relevant roundup.

What we would buy for four people

A storage water heater standing against a wall in a service space

Pick 1 — Most gas tank replacements

A. O. Smith Signature 100, 50 gal gas

The straightforward 50-gallon gas replacement, and the reason to pay attention to the burner size: the 50,000 BTU version is rated at a 91-gallon first-hour rating against 77 gallons for the 40,000 BTU one.

Published specifications for the A. O. Smith Signature 100, 50 gal gas
Capacity50 gallons
First-hour rating91 gallons (50,000 BTU model); 77 gallons (40,000 BTU model)
Burner50,000 BTU/h ultra-low NOx, or 40,000 BTU/h
Dimensions61 in H x 22 in dia (50,000 BTU); 60-3/4 in H x 22 in dia (40,000 BTU)
Warranty6-year tank and parts with 1-year labor (50,000 BTU); 9-year tank and parts with 2-year labor (40,000 BTU)

What is good

  • A 91-gallon first-hour rating from a 50-gallon tank covers back-to-back showers that empty an electric tank of the same size
  • Widely stocked at Lowe's, so same-day replacement is realistic when the old one fails
  • Ultra-low NOx burner meets the stricter air-district rules in California and Texas
  • 22-inch diameter fits most existing alcoves without re-plumbing

What is not

  • The longer 9-year warranty is on the smaller burner, so warranty and recovery pull in opposite directions
  • Atmospheric venting needs a working chimney or B-vent
  • Standing pilot and flue losses mean it idles energy away all day

Skip it if: Skip it if your water heater sits in a sealed closet or a space with combustion air problems. An atmospheric gas tank needs real combustion air and a real flue — the power-vent or direct-vent models exist for exactly that case.

Pick 2 — Most heat pump installs

Rheem ProTerra 50 gal hybrid

The heat pump water heater to start with: a 3.88 UEF, a 67-gallon first-hour rating, and a 37°F lower operating limit that is the widest ambient range in its class — which is the specification that decides whether it works in a cold garage.

Published specifications for the Rheem ProTerra 50 gal hybrid
Capacity50 gallons
Efficiency3.88 UEF; up to 4.07 UEF advertised on 30 A models
First-hour rating67 gallons
Recovery27 gallons per hour
Heat pump capacity4,200 BTU/h
Backup element5,000 W
Voltage208 - 240 V
Ambient operating range37 - 145°F
Cold-climate ratingMeets Northern Climate Specification Tier 4
Leak protectionIntegrated detection with factory-fitted auto shutoff; leaks limited to no more than 20 oz
Warranty10-year limited

What is good

  • A 37°F lower limit means the compressor keeps running in an unheated garage through most of a northern winter
  • 3.88 UEF is roughly four times a resistance tank, so the running cost difference is not marginal
  • 67-gallon first-hour rating is better than most 50-gallon resistance tanks
  • EcoNet control lets you force high-demand mode before guests arrive instead of discovering the limit

What is not

  • It is a refrigeration appliance in your house: there is a compressor, a fan and a condensate drain
  • Needs roughly 700 cubic feet of air, or louvered doors, in a closet
  • It cools and dehumidifies the space it stands in, which is a gift in a Houston garage and a problem in a Minnesota basement

Skip it if: Skip it if the only place it can go is a finished, heated room you occupy. It will steal heat from that room in winter — your furnace then pays for the hot water, and the efficiency you bought disappears.

Pick 3 — Electric tanks in finished spaces

Rheem Gladiator 50 gal electric

The electric tank to put above a finished floor: integrated leak detection with an automatic shutoff valve that limits a leak to around 20 ounces, plus a 12-year tank and parts warranty.

Published specifications for the Rheem Gladiator 50 gal electric
Capacity50 gallons
Elements5,500 W double element, 240 V
First-hour rating63 gallons
Efficiency0.92 UEF
Leak protection360° LeakSense detection with factory-fitted automatic shutoff; leaks limited to no more than 20 oz
Warranty12-year tank and parts, 3-year labor

What is good

  • The auto-shutoff valve is the single most valuable feature on any tank installed over drywall
  • 12-year tank and parts with 3-year labor is among the longest electric warranties sold at retail
  • 5,500 W double element gives faster recovery than the usual 4,500 W pair
  • Leak alerts arrive before the ceiling does

What is not

  • A 63-gallon first-hour rating from 50 gallons is ordinary — electric recovery is slow, full stop
  • Running cost is electric-rate running cost; a heat pump model costs far less to run
  • The shutoff valve is one more serviceable part in the cold inlet

Skip it if: Skip it if the heater lives on a concrete slab next to a floor drain and you have the headroom for a heat pump model. You are paying for leak protection you can get from a 20-dollar pan, and giving up the running-cost saving a heat pump would deliver.

What moves a family of four up a size

  • A soaking tub. A deep tub can hold 60 to 80 gallons. One fill is your entire peak hour.
  • Two bathrooms used simultaneously. Not two bathrooms — two bathrooms *at once*. That is the difference between 70 gallons and 85.
  • A cold-inlet climate. Northern winter inlet temperatures mean a bigger rise, which means slower recovery on every fuel.
  • Teenagers. Not a joke. Shower duration is the single biggest variable in this arithmetic and it changes with the ages in the house.

What goes in with it

A water heater is a system, not a box. These are the parts that go in with it, and the ones people discover they need halfway through the job.

  • Expansion tank

Required by code on a closed system, which is most homes with a pressure-reducing valve.

  • Drain pan

Cheap insurance anywhere the tank sits above something you care about.

  • Anode rod

The part that decides when the tank leaks. Replacing it is the highest-value hour of maintenance there is.

Questions people actually ask

›Is 40 gallons enough for a family of 4?
On gas, yes, provided the first-hour rating is around 70 gallons or better — gas recovery does the work that storage would otherwise have to. On electric resistance, 40 gallons for four people will run out, because recovery is roughly 21 gallons an hour at a 90°F rise.
›Do I need a 50 or a 65 gallon electric tank for 4 people?
If your showers genuinely stagger, 50 gallons works. If two bathrooms run at the same time, go to 65. The deciding question is not how many people live there but how many draws overlap in the worst hour.
›Will a 50 gallon heat pump water heater keep up with 4 people?
Yes, in normal use. The Rheem ProTerra 50 is rated at 67 gallons in the first hour, which is better than most 50-gallon resistance tanks. What catches people out is an unusual day — guests, back-to-back baths — where you want to put the unit into its high-demand mode in advance.
›What first-hour rating should a family of 4 look for?
70 gallons or more. Below that you are relying on the showers not overlapping, which works until the morning they do.
›Does switching to low-flow shower heads help?
Substantially. Going from a 2.5 GPM head to a 1.75 GPM head cuts about 30% off the biggest line item in your peak hour. It is the cheapest capacity increase available and it is almost never mentioned in sizing advice.
