A calculator sitting on printed figures and paperwork

Two Rheem warranty conditions catch people out. For residential applications the warranty is provided after online registration is complete, within 90 days of installation. And the residential tankless gas limited warranty is available only to the original owner at the original installation location and is not transferable. Register the day it goes in.

A water heater warranty is one of the few product warranties ordinary people actually claim on, because tanks fail inside their coverage period reasonably often. Which makes the conditions attached to it worth reading once, properly.

Condition 1: register within 90 days

Rheem states that for residential applications, warranty is provided to the original customer after online product registration is complete, and that registration must be completed within 90 days of installation.

Practically:

  1. Photograph the data plate before the installer leaves. You need the model number and serial number, and once the unit is in an alcove those can be awkward to read.
  2. Register the same day. Not "when I get round to it" — the window is 90 days and nobody remembers at day 85.
  3. Keep the installation invoice. It establishes the installation date the 90 days runs from, and in a labor claim it establishes who installed it.
  4. Save the confirmation email somewhere you will find it in eight years. A folder in your email with the house address on it is the simplest system.

Condition 2: it is not transferable on tankless gas

Rheem states that for residential tankless gas water heaters, the limited warranty is available only to the original owner at the original installation location and is not transferable. The same restriction applies on its Rheem-Ruud commercial units, where the warranty is available only to the original owner.

Two consequences:

  • If you buy a house with a Rheem tankless unit, do not assume you have warranty coverage. Ask for the registration details, and then verify with Rheem rather than taking the seller's word.
  • If you sell a house with one, the remaining coverage is not a selling point you can transfer. It is still worth passing on the documentation, because it establishes the install date and the model for any future service.

What the warranty periods actually are

Published coverage on the Rheem units in our registry
UnitCoverage
Gladiator electric tank12-year tank and parts, 3-year labor
ProTerra heat pump10-year limited
Prestige RTGH tankless12-year heat exchanger residential, 5-year parts, 1-year labor
Performance Platinum electricPer the specific model listing; commonly 10 to 12 years tank and parts

Note that the RTGH's heat exchanger coverage is longer than its parts coverage, which is typical of tankless warranties: the expensive component is covered longest and the control board and sensors are covered for less. Read which part a number applies to before comparing two brands on a single figure.

What a tank warranty usually does not cover

Warranty exclusions are broadly similar across this industry, and these are the ones that cause arguments:

  • Failure to perform the maintenance in the installation manual. For a tankless unit that means the annual descale; for a tank, often the anode rod. Keep receipts for descaling supplies. Flush kits.
  • Installation not to code or not by a qualified installer where the manual requires one.
  • Damage from water chemistry outside stated limits — very hard water, or softened water in some terms.
  • Operating without thermal expansion control on a closed system, which is also a code violation. Expansion tank code requirements.
  • Labor, after the labor period ends. A 12-year tank warranty with 3 years of labor means that in year 8 you get a tank and you pay the plumber.

How to make a claim

  1. Get the model and serial number

From the data plate on the unit, or from your registration confirmation if the plate is hard to reach.

  2. Confirm your registration and dates

You need the installation date and proof of registration. The installation invoice covers the first; your confirmation email the second.

  3. Document the failure

Photographs of the leak or the fault code, and the date you noticed it. If a plumber diagnosed it, get that in writing.

  4. Contact Rheem or the selling dealer

Either route works. A dealer who sold and installed it often moves faster because they handle the replacement logistics.

  5. Expect a part or a tank, not a refund

A tank warranty gets you a replacement tank. Labor is only covered inside the labor period, so budget for the plumber unless you are inside it.

  6. Register the replacement

A warranty replacement is a new unit with its own registration requirement. This is the step people miss twice.

Procedure: Make a Rheem water heater warranty claim

The units these terms apply to

Pick 1 — Electric tanks in finished spaces

Rheem Gladiator 50 gal electric

The electric tank to put above a finished floor: integrated leak detection with an automatic shutoff valve that limits a leak to around 20 ounces, plus a 12-year tank and parts warranty.

Published specifications for the Rheem Gladiator 50 gal electric
Capacity50 gallons
Elements5,500 W double element, 240 V
First-hour rating63 gallons
Efficiency0.92 UEF
Leak protection360° LeakSense detection with factory-fitted automatic shutoff; leaks limited to no more than 20 oz
Warranty12-year tank and parts, 3-year labor

What is good

  • The auto-shutoff valve is the single most valuable feature on any tank installed over drywall
  • 12-year tank and parts with 3-year labor is among the longest electric warranties sold at retail
  • 5,500 W double element gives faster recovery than the usual 4,500 W pair
  • Leak alerts arrive before the ceiling does

What is not

  • A 63-gallon first-hour rating from 50 gallons is ordinary — electric recovery is slow, full stop
  • Running cost is electric-rate running cost; a heat pump model costs far less to run
  • The shutoff valve is one more serviceable part in the cold inlet

Skip it if: Skip it if the heater lives on a concrete slab next to a floor drain and you have the headroom for a heat pump model. You are paying for leak protection you can get from a 20-dollar pan, and giving up the running-cost saving a heat pump would deliver.

Pick 2 — Most whole-house gas jobs

Rheem Prestige RTGH-95DVLN

The condensing gas tankless most houses should start with: 5.5 GPM at a 70°F rise covers two showers in a cold-inlet climate, and the 12-year residential heat exchanger warranty is the longest on this list.

Published specifications for the Rheem Prestige RTGH-95DVLN
FuelNatural gas (LP variant sold separately)
Gas inputUp to 199,900 BTU/h
Flow at a 70°F rise5.5 GPM
Maximum flow9.5 GPM at a 35°F rise
EfficiencyUp to 0.93 UEF, stainless condensing heat exchanger
Minimum activation flow0.4 GPM
VentingUp to 150 ft of 3-inch PVC; 60 ft of 2-inch PVC
Dimensions18-1/2 in W x 9-3/4 in D x 27-1/2 in H
Warranty12-year heat exchanger (residential), 5-year parts, 1-year labor

What is good

  • The 70°F-rise figure is published, so you can size it honestly instead of guessing from the headline number
  • Condensing design vents in PVC, which is far cheaper to run than stainless category III pipe
  • 0.4 GPM activation means a trickle at a bathroom faucet still fires the burner
  • Long PVC vent runs let you put it where the gas line already is

What is not

  • Needs a gas line sized for nearly 200,000 BTU/h — many existing 1/2-inch runs are not
  • Condensate has to go somewhere, which means a drain or a condensate pump
  • Annual descaling is not optional on hard water

Skip it if: Skip it if your gas meter and line cannot carry 199,900 BTU/h. Upsizing the gas line is often the single largest cost in a tankless conversion, and no amount of unit quality fixes a starved burner.

What goes in with it

A water heater is a system, not a box. These are the parts that go in with it, and the ones people discover they need halfway through the job.

  • Expansion tank

Required by code on a closed system, which is most homes with a pressure-reducing valve.

  • Drain pan

Cheap insurance anywhere the tank sits above something you care about.

  • Anode rod

The part that decides when the tank leaks. Replacing it is the highest-value hour of maintenance there is.

Questions people actually ask

›Do I need to register my Rheem water heater for the warranty?
For residential applications, yes. Rheem states the warranty is provided to the original customer after online product registration is complete, and that registration must be done within 90 days of installation.
›Is the Rheem water heater warranty transferable?
Not on residential tankless gas units — Rheem states the warranty is available only to the original owner at the original installation location and is not transferable. If you are buying a house with one, verify the position with Rheem rather than assuming.
›How long is the Rheem Gladiator warranty?
12 years on the tank and parts with 3 years of labor, per the retail listing. That makes it the longest electric tank coverage in our registry.
›What is the warranty on a Rheem tankless water heater?
The Prestige RTGH series carries 12 years on the heat exchanger for residential use, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labor. Note the different periods for different components.
›What voids a water heater warranty?
Commonly: skipping the maintenance in the installation manual, installation not to code, water chemistry outside the stated limits, and operating a closed system without thermal expansion control. Keep receipts for descaling supplies and anode rods.
›Does a Rheem warranty cover labor?
Only within the stated labor period, which is shorter than the tank period — 3 years on the Gladiator against 12 on the tank, and 1 year on the RTGH tankless. Outside that window you get the part and you pay the plumber.
